Why I Created Warrior Mermaids: The Inspiration Behind Maradonia

There has always been something about the ocean that feels mysterious to me. It is beautiful, peaceful, captivating—and yet, beneath the surface, there is an incredible amount of power. That contrast is exactly what inspired me to create the warrior mermaids of Maradonia.

I wanted to create mermaids who were more than (the classic) beautiful creatures sitting on rocks, brushing their hair and waiting for someone to rescue them.

I wanted mermaids who could save themselves. Mermaids who were courageous. Mermaids who were leaders. Mermaids who could fight for what they loved—and still be feminine, graceful, and beautiful. Because to me, that is what makes women so extraordinary.

I believe women can be fierce and beautiful at the same time. We can be compassionate and strong. Elegant and powerful. Soft and courageous.

We don't have to choose one. That idea became the heart of the mermaids in Maradonia.

They are bold, captivating, intelligent, and powerful. They aren't afraid to stand up for their kingdom, their families, and what they believe is right. And if I had to compare them to something in nature, I would compare them to a thunderstorm.

A thunderstorm can be breathtakingly beautiful. You can watch the clouds roll across the sky, see the flashes of lightning, and feel completely captivated by the spectacle. But you also know there is tremendous power behind it.

That is why I wrote about a different kind of mermaid... warrior mermaids.

Beautiful… yet dangerous.

Graceful… yet fierce.

Captivating… yet powerful.

They are not powerful because they have lost their femininity.

They are powerful because they embrace every part of who they are.

The Warrior Mermaid Within You

One of my favorite things about fantasy is that it can take something completely imaginary and somehow make us see ourselves more clearly. You don't live in an underwater kingdom. You aren't carrying a magical weapon or fighting any army. But you may have your own battles in life. You may be navigating a difficult season... You may be trying to find your voice. You may be chasing a dream that other people don't understand. You may be standing at the edge of something new, leaving the past behind and wondering if you're brave enough to take the next step.

You don't have to be fearless to be powerful. You don't have to be perfect to be worthy. And you don't have to wait for someone else to discover your strength. Sometimes, you have to discover it for yourself. That is the message I hope many of my readers take away from this story. If that's you, I hope you see a little bit of yourself in mermaids of Maradonia. Because I believe there is a warrior inside every woman.

Sometimes she is loud. Sometimes she is quiet. Sometimes she is still discovering who she is. And that is okay... Because sometimes building the greatest version of yourself isn't about who you are about to become, it's the journey of discovering who you were meant to become!
